Chapter Ten
âWe, the jury, find the defendant, Timothy J. Carson, not guilty,â the jury spokeswoman said, smiling at the man who stood beside Katarina.
A cheer echoed throughout the courtroom. The judge hammered his gavel, shushing them. âThank you, madam floor person. The defendant is hereby released and is free to go.â
Katarina found herself wrapped in an enthusiastic bear hug. âI canât begin to thank you, Kat. I never thought this day would finally come.â
She smiled down at the short slightly balding man as he stepped back.
âYou were innocent and the jury saw that, Tim. It wasnât hard convincing them.â
He shook his head. âIâm glad you were so confident because I sure as hell wasnât.â
Kat put a reassuring hand on his arm and began gathering the mounds of paper in front of her. She eyed the irate woman across the aisle that was in the process of arguing with her attorney.
Her client followed her gaze as he reached down to pick up his briefcase. âMy father-in-lawâs death was tragic enough but to accuse me of coercing him into writing his will the way he did was despicable even for her. It wasnât my fault the man finally saw her for what she really was. A bitch of the worst sort. Then to convince the prosecutor to indict me for something I had nothing to do withâ¦â His brown eyes were indignant. âImagine having the audacity to think I had anything to do with his death. Heâd had a bad heart for years and she knew that.â He glanced over at the jury as they filed out. âIâm glad they had more sense.â
âEx-wives can be vicious,â Jack Steinman murmured as he lifted another box of evidence. âEspecially when theyâve lost a loved one and all that lovely money one right after the other.â
Timâs lips curved. âSounds like you speak from experience.â
âNot personally,â Jack said, returning the grin as they made their way down the aisle. âBut Iâve defended enough women scorned to get the gist.â
Their client held out his hand when they walked into the lobby, shaking both of theirs. âAnytime the two of you need my expertise feel free to call. Iâll put you at the top of my list.â
Kat raised a brow. âNo offense, Tim, but Iâm not exactly champing at the bit to elicit the use of a serial profiler no matter how much I like you.â
He turned to her in amazement. âYouâre a noted criminal attorney and you havenât defended a serial killer yet?â
âNo, thank the Lord. I pride myself on my objectivity but Iâm not sure I could manage that one.â
Timâs attention turned toward the woman who was rushing across the marble floor, her arms outstretched. He caught her in a bear hug, swinging her around and then thumbed the tears away as he murmured softly to her.
âI think this is our cue to vacate the premises,â Jack said aside to Kat.
She nodded, moving toward the wide front steps that led to the street. âThanks for all your help, Jack.
